During the 1980’s big hair, tight jeans, and guys wearing makeup were the norm. And out of the 80’s came some equally impressive album. 1987 was one of them. A pure rock album, Whitesnake produced some of their best work on this album alone.
Originally a gospel rock band, Whitesnake made the change in the 70’s to a rock band and didn’t turn back.
I first heard this album, courtesy of my sister in the 80’s on cassette, and unfortunately it didn’t have the last track, 'You're Gonna Break My Heart Again' on it, but it did make an impact on me.
I don’t think there is one hard rock fan who grew up in the 80’s and even 90’s who doesn’t know who Whitesnake are, or in fact what could be their biggest hit song, 'Here I Go Again'. And if so, then they should be shot.
This is one album that should be every rock fan’s CD collection. Brilliant from start to finish, it is pure rock and has some guitar solos John Sykes (guitar and backing vocals) should be proud of.
Understandably it is an 80’s album, but that is one of the things that does make it so brilliant. One of the things I love about 80’s hard rock is that it was about three things- sex, drugs, and rock n roll and left at that. It was evident in the music, and the blistering guitar solos were a major part of an album.
'Here I Go Again', is still one of my favourite songs. From the beginning to the ending, the raspiness of Coverdale’s voice, makes the song solely his. The images of loneliness and heartbreak are something we have all faced at one stage or another in our lives, and this song shapes and moulds the feelings perfectly.
It will go down as one of the best power ballads written in the 80’s, and that’s a big feat, considering power ballads are another thing the 80’s were well known for.
1987 is still my favourite Whitesnake CD, and that’s not likely to change. Although not the originally band, this Whitesnake line up of David Coverdale, John Sykes, Neil Murray and Aynsley Dunbar.
Favourite songs on the album: Bad boys, Give me all your love, crying in the rain, straight for the heart, here I go again, You’re gonna break my heart again
I give this 4/5
