Like the Southern influenced title, Sweet Home Alabama’s soundtrack is Southern influenced with the likes of Ryan Adams, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow adding their magic to the album.
What is surprising about this soundtrack is the choice of Artist used to cover the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd Anthem ‘Sweet Home Alabama’. There’s no doubt that Jewel is a talented singer and songwriting, but her lilting vocals do nothing for ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ except perhaps to take the oomph out of it.
Even Avril Lavigne takes a step away from her trademark punk sound to produce ‘Falling Down’, which is more pop than punk, and you know what? It’s actually surprisingly good. It’s a toned down style for Avril that works well.
One of the biggest surprises on the album though is Sheryl Crow taking on the Hank Williams classic ‘Long Gone Lonesome Blues’. Steering away from her familiar sound, Crow yodels and adds twang to her sound, making her almost unrecognizable. The sound is different for most Crow fans, but she still shines through, making this one of the gems on the album.
And what can you say about Ryan Adams? His ‘Gonna Make You Love Me’ is one of the reasons I fell in love with Adams’ music in the first place. This is, without a doubt, the best track on the album, and at only two and a half minutes it is a toe-tapping, rollicking track.
Dolly Parton’s, ‘Marry Me’ is delivered in her traditional kitsch style and with her sweet vocals and bluegrass style, it makes for a fun tune.
Perhaps The Calling’s cover of ‘Keep Your Hands To Yourself’ could have been omitted. Sure, it’s a rocking track but they seem to try too hard. The song is kept to its true form, but it would have been nice if they tried to do something a little different.
A great soundtrack, with some real gems on it.
I give it 3/5
