12. Love Autopsy- Hugh Grant
This soundtrack is surprisingly good. It’s surprising since Hugh Grant sings more than half of it, and let’s face it most of us question his acting abilities let alone his singing. However, there is something charming about his voice as he, suitably, portrays an 80’s has been attempting another shot at fame through Cora Corman (newcomer Haley Bennett).
It’s also a fun soundtrack that you’re never meant to take seriously. Making fun of the music industry and the ruthlessness of it, the songs are meant to be cheesy and easily portray the Wham!, and 80’s music era.
Haley Bennett is a treat to listen to, although some of her songs are god damn awful ('Bootytown' for example). However she sings them with much gusto, and has a beautiful voice. It’ll be interesting to see where she goes from here, whether she works on a music career or acting, or maybe both.
Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore’s duet on the demo version of ‘Way Back Into Love’ is enjoyable, simply because the actors know they’re not singers.
Grant, throughout the whole album, knows his limitations and works around his imperfections by performing whole heartedly not just as a singer but a pianist.
The songs titles are silly (especially ‘Pop Goes My Heart’ and ‘Love Autopsy’) but they’re fun. So, if you’re a fan of 80’s music, cheesy songs, and want to Hugh Grant successfully garner a tune, then get this album.
I give it 3/5
