Many moons ago, the late 80’s and early 90’s were represented by some of the biggest hard rock/metal bands of all time. Kicking off with three of the biggest, baddest and prettiest with Motley Crue, Poison and Skid Row, Monster Madness takes listeners a trip down memory lane when leather, big hair, and black eyeliner went hand in hand with sex, drugs and rock n roll.

‘Dr Feelgood’ and ‘Unskinny Bop’ never fail to get my sense tingling from beginning to end, throw in early 90’s rockers in the form of Warrant’s ‘I Saw Red’, Extreme’s ‘Hole-Hearted’ and Slaughter’s 'Up All Night’, and you’ve got the back catalogue to many teens yester-years.

While listeners may not like some of the bands, this is an album to be appreciated. The only song that really doesn’t fit is Faith No More’s ‘Epic’. While there’s no doubt that it is a good song, it seems an oddity on an album that consists of the type of cock-rock genre on this album.

Another reason to appreciate this compilation is that it highlights the beauty of the power-ballad. While the power-ballad has been around since the beginning of time, it was the hard rock and hair bands that put their stamp on it. Shining examples are Giant’s ‘I’ll See You In My Dreams’, and Skid Row’s ‘I Remember You’

Monster Madness is a nice trip down memory lane for those of us who remember when times seemed simpler, and music was about debauchery, rebellion, sleaze and the songs that grouped it altogether.

Tracks not to miss: Bang Your Head, Dr Feelgood, I Remember You, and I Wanna Rock.
