Hello…X is the sophomore album for Tristan Prettyman, following the success of her critically acclaimed Twentythree. Touted as the female version of Jack Johnson, this former model and surfer is a fresh breath of air from some of the unoriginal no talents currently hitting the charts.
From the start to finish, listeners will sense what they can expect to transpire within the 12 tracks, and they shouldn’t feel disappointed. Prettyman artfully creates a consistent backdrop for her throaty vocals.
Hello is a storybook collection of the Californian native’s musings and thoughts about love, heartbreak and life.
With melodies that are as appealing as they are laid-back, each song sees Prettyman use various guitar techniques from finger-picking and strumming to slide guitar while taking us through the transitions of her life.
While many have called Prettyman Country-folk, there is a blues edge to Hello, that show a shade of her musical influences (Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell). While Prettyman may never reach the raw depth of these artists, she manages to channel their talent for storytelling, and in doing so produced an album well worthy a listen.
I give it 3/5
