What does a talented young singer, who has reached as far as she can reach in her solo career, do with her spare time? If she’s Michelle Branch, she teams up with her best friend Jessica Harp to form The Wreckers, and release a record.
While Branch alone, came across as folk pop, the Wreckers can be considered more pop country.
With pleasant harmonies, and simple lyrics, there will be fans disappointed by this record, but I think there is more to it than it seems.
In fact, the band has potential, and takes Michelle Branch and her style in a different direction, but it is one that does suit her.
Teaming her with Jessica Harp works well because the girls have very similar voices, and this is none more evident than on their hit single the good kind.
It wouldn’t be surprising if every single they release becomes a hit. Favorites of mines are the darker tracks such as 'Hard To Love You', 'Cigarettes' and the title track 'Stand Still, Look Pretty'. To me, these tracks are probably the grittiest and the most mature for the girls.
'Tennessee' is definitely a track worthy of a mention. It has the folk charm that Michelle Branch made popular as a solo artist.
The same goes for 'My Oh My', which despite it’s bluegrass tunes, has a real pop flavor to it, as they reminisce of how times have changed in their lives.
One of the things about country these days is that it can easily blend in with pop or rock, and in this case it’s hard to tell when which genre begins and the others ends.
If you like the Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, or even Leann Rimes, then this is probably the album for you.
Add a slickly produced record, and you have a real winner on your hands.
I give it 4/5
