Kid Rock-The History Of Rock

August 6th 2008 08:47
Kid Rock

Biography

Kid Rock is not a man who can be easily labelled. Known for his hillbilly type of rock/rap he
takes his genre-blurring music to new limits.

He is best known for his albums, devil without a cause, and cocky, and for his singles, that include his duet with Sheryl Crow on pictures.

Together with his band the Twisted Brown Trucker, he fuses rap, hard rock, southern rock, country and blues together.

He was offered a contract by Jive at 17, when they were looking for another white rapper. He signed against his parents wishes, and immediately joined the straight from the underground tour.
In 1990 he released the album, grits sandwiches for breakfast, which was ignored by radio. After the demise of Vanilla Ice, he was dropped by Jive.
In 1993 he signed with an indie record label, and released The Polyfuzed method. The album got some college radio airplay and after his 1994 EP, fire it up, the label went bankrupt.
Kid decided to form his own record label, Top Dog, and from 1994 to 1995 he released demo albums.
Early morning pimped was the album Kid needed to launch his music career again, and in 1997 he was signed to Atlantic Records. They re-released The Polyfuze Method with three new tracks, and signed Kid Rock for a $100,000 record deal.
1998 saw him release devil without a cause, which saw it sit on shelves for 8 months before MTV started playing I am the bulldog. It became a minor hit, but opened the world’s eyes to Kid Rock.
After two live performances on MTV, the album saw renewed interest and Kid was soon on the family values tour with Limp Bizkit and Staind. He released three more singles from the album, cowboy¸ which was country and folk music fused with rap, only god know why, a ballad¸and wasting time, an ode to getting drunk and stoned.
The album, eventually sold 11 million copies.
2000 saw the release of the history of rock, a collection of remixed or re-recorded songs.
Cocky was released in 2001, with the first single “forever” a mix of rap rock and funk. It was followed by the country ballad, lonely road of faith. It only sold two million albums, but the album would open Kid to a new audience, with picture, which saw him team up with Sheryl Crow. It would be the most successful single of the album, and was certified gold.
Riding on the success of picture, Kid released his self-titled album in 2003, fusing more of his country music with rap.
The first single was feel like making love, a cover of Bad Company’s hit song.
Since then Kid Rock has released a live album, and toured extensively, including going to Iraq to perform for US troops.

I have to admit I am a Kid Rock fan. I’m probably one of the few people who are willing to admit to this. I don’t know whether that comes from the fact, most people imagine Kid Rock fans to be Southern Hicks that chew tobacco, wear overalls, and have a confederate flag slapped somewhere on their pickup truck.
My love affair with Kid happened accidentally of course. I downloaded what was supposed to be Robbie Williams Angels, and it turned out to be Kid Rock’s forever. From that moment on, I was hooked on that song.
I didn’t think much else until I heard Picture, and was rehooked again. I was stunned by the odd duet, but it convinced me to check out more of his music, and purchused the history of Rock.

The History of Rock is an album that consists of re-recorded or remixed tracks from his earlier career. It’s a way for Kid to show us all that he didn’t just begin with devil without a cause, but that his career started much earlier.
To be honest, the album’s first half isn’t much special. But by dark and grey, he had renewed my interest with sizzling guitar solos, and his actual singing.

The tracks are country hick rock fused with rap, and he actually does hillbilly rock very well, and his ability to combine rock and rap actually works for him. I think my only complaint is sometimes the rap does not work for the song. That, and his claims of being a badass become a little redundant after a while.

Overall. Not the best album to introduce Kid Rock to new fans, but older fans definitely a must have.

I give it 2/5
