If you’re looking for a fun, power-pop/punk album, then you need to go no further than Always Moving Never Stopping. The debut album of Los Angeles-based The City Drive, it’s exactly what you would expect from a Californian band- fun, energetic, and with attitude.
The City Drive’s music is straight-forward power-pop/punk, and it’s not hard to imagine any of their songs played on the radio. Lead singer Danny Smith has a strong presence, which seems to indicate that the band was built around his presence. However, while this may be the case of much of the album, there are other songs such as ‘Defeated’ and ‘Saints’ indicate otherwise. ‘Defeated’ has layered vocals, and melodies that shows that each member helps to make The City Drive the energetic band it is.
While Smith’s vocals are definitely the strongest aspect of this album, however the added layered vocals, well-written lyrics, and brisk beats make this album go from strength to strength.
While you may be thinking ‘Great, just another Emo band’ think again. Together since 2002, The City Drive had chalked up quite a bit of experience touring with The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, and The Alkaline Trio.
Each track on the album is solidly performed, and flows evenly. While it may not be as experimental as some would like, and does stick to that power-pop/punk genre, it’s still guaranteed to make you want to turn the music up, and sing along.
I give it 3/5
