Taylor Swift burst out onto the music scene from nowhere, with her hit single ‘Tim McGraw’, a beautiful tune about lost love, youthful passion and of course country crooner, Tim McGraw.
The first thing that strikes one about Swift is that her music is refreshing, honest, and her vocals on ‘Tim McGraw’ are almost perfect.
I have to admit one of the things that drew me to the song originally was the fact it was titled ‘Tim McGraw’, who happens to be one of my favourite country singers. However, while this may be seen by some as a passing tribute to McGraw, it is actually a very clever play on a failed love affair.
When Swift sings ‘When you think Tim McGraw/I hope you think my favourite song’ it’s only a reminder of what we have all done at one time or another- using associated places, names and items with our lost love. It’s one that has worked in the past, and certainly works this time around.
It’s hard to believe that it’s a newcomer singing this song, and not a seasoned pro. It’s no wonder that it became a smash hit for Swift.
The second thing is that while the, then 16 year-old, can sing about youthful lost love, she also can deliver some gutsy tunes about nasty breakups with ‘Picture To Burn’. With lines such as
‘I realize you love yourself much more than you could ever love me/So go and tell your friends that I’m obsessive and crazy/That’s fine. I’ll tell mine you’re gay’ Swift almost channels Avril and Ashlee Simpson in her own sweet way.
The first tracks are a good indication as to what to expect for the rest of the album- issues about loneliness, love, heartbreak, feeling unpretty and of course, how painful loving boys can be at time. You know, the usual teen angst album.
The only difference between Swift and other teeny-boppers is that Swift is a very talented singer-songwriter, who has been writing professionally since she was 14. So, it should be no surprise that she wrote all the material on her debut.
Even while there is no doubt that Swift is still a teenager, her music is solid, intelligent and while her vocals are both girlish and sweet, there’s also a maturity to them that belies her years.
That doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a long way to go, but like Rimes before her, there’s no doubt in my mind that Swift will successfully build a career for herself in the music industry.
Taylor Swift is still at an age where she is trying to find herself, and discover her music. If her, self-debut, album is any indication though, Swift certainly has much to offer.
I give it 4/5
