Between 1997 and the 2002 Shania Twain had the world at her feet. Producing hit after hit with her husband, Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange she could do no wrong. Then she completely disappeared off the music radar, only occasionally popping up to record ‘Shoes’ for The Desperate housewives soundtrack and pay tribute to Dolly Parton with her own version of ‘Coat Of Many Colors’.
In 2004 she released her first Greatest Hits album, with many of the songs spawning from a combination of her two biggest albums, The Woman In Me and Come On Over. Sadly, it failed to produce anything off her 1993 self-titled debut album, which spawned two massive hits for her.
Despite this, this is still a fairly decent Greatest Hits, and allows Twain to once again show while she and Lange were a formidable duo, with his writing and her singing. Twain has an uncanny ability to produce pop ditties that cater to pop fans while still maintaining her position as a country singer, with that unmistakable Nashville twang.
This includes three new songs- ‘Party For Two’ , ‘Don’t’ and ‘I Ain’t No Quitter’. Twain has gone done the same path with ‘Party For Two’ as she did with her albums ‘Come On Over’ and ‘Up’, releasing both a pop and country version.
On the pop version of ‘Party For Two’ she teams up with Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath while the country version sees her team up with newcomer Billy Currington. Both male vocalists leave their mark on the song, and help making each version of the song different from the other.
For those who are casual listeners who listened to Shania Twain on the radio, but never summoned up the courage to buy one of her album, here’s your chance. It’s also a winner for fans, with the new tracks that are aimed to tide them over until Twain releases a new album.
Even though it’s missing some of my favorite tracks such as ‘Crime Of The Century’ from her debut album and ‘It Only Hurt’s While I’m Breathing’ from 2002’s ‘Up!’ it’s still a solid collection of hits.
I give it 3/5
