Three years after the release of his platinum selling Hellbilly Deluxe, Zombie comes back with The Sinister Urge.
While it doesn’t have the same magic that Hellbilly had, Zombie still manages to wrap his voice around thunderous melodies, heavy grooves, and has blistering guitar riffs.
Again, the lyrics are set to a horror realm, and with titles such as House of 1,000 corpses, and scum of the earth, you’re not going to expect soppy love songs from the talented Mr Zombie.
The first time I heard this album, I hated it because I felt it was too different to his debut album, but listening to it now, there is a maturity to this sophomore album that I didn’t hear the first time around.
I think, while he was experimenting heavily with his sound on the first sound, this time around he knows what works for him, and has stuck to it. I also think the album has more of a rock feel to it than Hellbilly, as less of a metal feel. To be honest, I actually think this rock sound suits him well.
He has some superstar guest appearances on this album, teaming up with Metal King Ozzy Osbourne for 'Iron Head'.
The way they alternate lyrics works well, and Ozzy’s input is definitely effective, due to such the difference in voices. It also see Zombie head back to his heavier sound.
Again, the album is dark and forceful, and added onto it, are 'Scum Of The Earth'and 'House Of 1,000 Corpses', both tracks Zombie provided for soundtracks.
Zombie seems to have toned down the electric feel to this album, but california brings it back.
A toned down album for sure, but definitely not the worst thing I have heard.
Tracks not to miss: 'Dead Girl Superstar', 'Iron Head', 'California', 'Scum Of The Earth', and 'House Of 1,000 Corpses'(be warned the track is the longest, but definitely worth it-so turn it up loud and enjoy!)
I give it 3/5
