Open Up and Say Ahh was a turning point for Poison. While they did well with their first album, it was this album which caused garnered the most attention for Poison.
Firstly, the album caused much controversy because of its cover. Depicting a hellion painted in stripes and a long pointed tongue, many stores took one look at the cover and refused to stock it. Naturally, this caused many teenagers to rebel and go out and buy it just for that fact alone.

Secondly, the album managed to produce some of Poison’s biggest hits that include ‘Nothin’ But A Good Time’, ‘Fallen Angel’, ‘Your Mama Don’t Dance’ and ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’.

‘Nothin’ But A Good Time’ was the first single off the album, and epitomises everything that Poison represents- bad boys blowing their money on booze and women.

While the mentioned are great tracks, this album also holds other great tunes include two of my personal favourites- ‘Back To The Rocking Horse’ (Which sealed me with the line ‘All the Kings Horse and all the Kings Men/ ain’t got a hope in hell of putting my pieces back together again’), and ‘You Can Look But Don’t Touch’, which is a tale of attempting to seduce an innocent who turns out to be not-so-innocent.

Open Up and Say Ahh came out when a time when glam rock or hair Metal was at its prime. The album’s themes are not that surprising- they’re about partying (‘Nothin’ But A Good Time’), lost innocence (‘ Fallen Angel’), lost love (‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’), and of course sex (‘You Can Look But you Can’t Touch’).
While one of Poison’s biggest draw card is its charm and song centered around these themes, it has also been their downfall. While other bands such as Bon Jovi, and even Motley Crue have managed staying power, Poison have long faded to the background.

Like many albums, it’s not without it’s tarnished. The track ‘Bad For Good’ seems almost as if the band had nothing more to add to the album, so they threw this on as filler. However, the album is also a gem and shows the band at their prime.

Tracks not to miss: ‘You Can Look But Not Touch’, ‘Fallen Angel’, their brilliant cover of Loggins and Messina’s ‘Your Mama Can’t Dance’, and ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’.

My favourite Poison album of all time. I give it 5/5
