For those who are children of the 80s, many would remember that it was over condensed with the likes of Madonna, George Michael, Boy George, Bananarama, The Bangles and of course Phil Collins.
His first Greatest Hits album (and not likely to be his last), this contains a solid staple of all the hits that include ‘Easy Lover’, ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’, ‘A Groovy Kind Of Love’ and ‘Against All Odds’.
Made up on 16 tracks, it contains seven American #1 hits as well as a stomach-churning version of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colors’.
Phil Collins made a big impact on the 80’s, whether it was through his drumming and lead vocals on Genesis, as a solo act, or as a producer and this album is a testament to that.
I’ve got to admit I’ve always like Collins’ music, and have since I first heard Genesis in 1983. It just threw me completely that a drummer could also be a lead vocalist, and from there I was fascinated by the thought that drummers could do more than just…well drum.
Obviously years later there’s no doubt of that fact, but at the age of 7, it just seemed so out of the ordinary.
‘Against All Odds’ was that song to catapult Collins to fame as a solo artist, and with the perfect amount of emotion, it’s no surprise that it earned a Grammy Award in 1985. A clever song about a protagonist asking his ex-lover to ‘take a look at me’ knowing that getting back together is ‘Against All Odds’, it was written about Collins’ first wife, who left him.
One of the delightful aspects about Collins is that many of his songs have been written about his personal life, which explains some of the darker themes.
Collins is not afraid to team up with other musicians and does so on a number of songs on this Greatest Hit Package.
‘Easy Lover’ sees him duet with Earth, Wind and Fire’s Phillip Bailey. It’s the first time that the song has appeared on a Collins’ album, and was recorded for Bailey’s solo album, Chinese Wall, in 1984.
‘Separate Lives’ is another great track on this album that sees Collins team up with Marilyn Martin. Although it doesn’t rival ‘Against All Odds’ it is definitely right up there. A ballad about breaking up and heartbreak, it’s a raw, heartfelt tune that many who have had their hearts broken can relate to.
It’s hard to point out any bad aspects to this album, or any filler. To be honest, the only bad thing I can say about this album is that ‘True Colors’ stinks, or at least for me it does. No one can outdo Lauper, although many artists have tried…and failed. Collins’ version of it is vastly different, and the pitch of his voice just doesn’t suit the song.
However his cover of The Mindbenders ‘Groovy Kind Of Love’ is definitely worthy. Although it had mixed reactions by critics, I think Collins version is upbeat, bouncy while still managing to inject the correct amount of emotion.
This is one CD that any child of the 80’s should have in their collection for nostalgic reasons. You can’t go wrong with all Collins’ smash hits.
And for those who haven’t experienced Collins both as a drummer, and a vocalist this is definitely a worthy Greatest Hits.
I give it 4/5
