Thirty-Eight years after the band released a single, and then broke up, Mudcrutch have released their first
album. And, it’s well worth waiting for. But then it’s hard to hate a band that’s flame burnt out quickly, only to have Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rise from the ashes.

Petty is well known for his side projects from the Heartbreakers and they’re not to be underestimated (How anyone could underestimate The Travelling Wilburys, I have no idea). So, it wasn’t too surprising when he decided to get together with his fellow Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, and take a trip down memory lane.

Mudcrutch sees Petty, Campbell and Tench team up with Tom Leadon (Whose brother Bernie co-founded The Eagles) and Randall Marsh.
Delivering a sound that can only be called classic rock fused with country, Mudcrutch’s debut album is a mixture of covers and Petty originals.

One of the first differences you’ll notice about this album is that it has a lot more jamming rock than you’ll ever find on a Tom Petty album. The other thing is that Petty put aside his guitar, and leaves Mike Campbell and Tom Lendon to cover those licks. Instead of playing his Rickenbacker, he plays bass as he did in the early days.

Recorded live, the album was recorded over ten days with the arrangements done on the studio floor. Cleanly cut is the only way to describe it.

While some of the songs do range to the mediocre, and aren’t as appealing as they could be (‘Maria’ for example). There are others that stand out.
‘Crystal River’ is the epic written and performed with more than just a shade of The Grateful Dead influence. The lyrics definitely veer more towards the Dead than the Heartbreakers.
Other tracks that stand out include their cover of Dave Dudley’s ‘Six Days On the Road’, which has been infused with heavier guitars and piano and their cover of The Byrd’s ‘Lovers of The Bayou’.

For fans who have been waiting 38 years for a Mudcrutch reunion will be thrilled with this album, even if the sound is not quite the same as the original Mudcrutch sound.

I give this 3/5
