What does an artist who has amassed a strong following, produced hit after hit and released a couple of Christmas do when it seems like there’s no challenge she can’t win? If you’re Martina McBride you tackle the classics and release an album of covers from some of Country’s biggest and brightest stars.
Now for die-hard fans of true country, and not the pop-country that is hitting the charts so often these days, this may seem like a cringe-worthy thought. But, don’t despair, as McBride covers the classic in exactly the right way-by staying true to form.
One of Martina NcBride’s star attributes is that she has a timeless singing voice and a quality about her that well is…timeless. She doesn’t try to change ‘Rose Garden’ ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You’ or ‘I Don’t Hurt Anymore’, instead she pays tribute to their artists by recognising them for the hits they were.
You have to wonder if this album would be quite so enjoyable to listen to if it wasn’t for the fact that Mcbride obviously recording each and every song. In keeping them true to form, she’s also stamped them as her own.
Simply put, this is a straight-forward Country album. There is no glossing up of the songs, no fancy recording tricks, just a talented musician doing what she does best. It’s also a pleasure to hear McBride sing in a softer voice than most fans would be used to. While she is known for her powerful vocals, this album pays tribute to her softer side. It also shows her uncanny talent to know when to belt them out (as she does on the brilliant ‘Rose Garden’) and when to tone it down ('Today I Started Loving You Again’).
For fans of pop-country, you may feel a little disappointed in this album but fans who can put aside the Shania Twains, Faith Hills of today’s Country, than this is an album worth listening to. My advice is to give it a chance, and listen to when steel pedal guitars were as prominent as strings and Country was just that Country.
Tracks that are as great today as they were on their first release, ‘Rose Garden’, ‘Once A Day’, ‘You Win Again’, and ‘Heartaches By The Number’.
I give this 4/5
