I always knew Kid Rock could sing. Not just rap, but sing. His duet with Sheryl Crow on the award-winning ‘Picture’ was a testament to that, as was his teaming up with Nickelback to cover Elton John’s ‘Saturday’s Alright For Fighting’. But with Rock n Roll Jesus Kid Rock pushes the envelope that little much further, establishing himself as a bona fide rock star.

‘Rock n Roll Jesus’, Rock delivers a heavy metal rocker that is about bring classic rock back. It’s a great way to start the album, and an indication of what to expect for the rest of Rock n Roll Jesus. Record Label: Atlantic

Kicking off the album with its title track,
One of the first things I love about this album is that Kid Rock manages to lay down a slather of contradictions about what he is. Is he the God-fearing man (‘Blue Jeans and a Rosary’), the spiteful, cigar-smoking Chauvinist (‘Half Your Age’), or the gentle lover ('When You Love Someone').
Granted most of these contradictions are nothing new to Rock fans, who have seen and heard it all before but it allows those new to Rock’s music to see a different side to the self-proclaimed redneck from Detroit.
Rock isn’t afraid of showing his wistful side either on ‘All Summer Long’. A Bob-Seger influenced tune (See Seger’s Night Moves) about sexual awakening, it samples Lynyrd Skynrd’s ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and Warren Zevon's 'Werewolves Of London'.
While some fans may see this album as a step aside from the rap he usually produces, ‘All Summer Long’ is a clear indication that some things haven’t changed and that is the Southern Rock backbone that is present on all his albums.
‘Amen’ sees Rock dabble with a Gospel Choir, as he takes on religion, racism and the war in Iraq. A ballsy move, but one not so surprising considering Kid Rock is renown for tackling issues that others shy away from. Together with ‘When You Love Someone’ it shows a softer side to Rock, and will endear him to many of his female fans.
However, tracks such as ‘So Hott’ and ‘Sugar’ give the fans a little of his edgier and older stuff.
With lines such as "I don't want to be your friend/ I want to fuck you like I'm never gonna see you again," there’s no doubt that Kid Rock isn't planning on seeking his own redemption anytime soon.
Whether these two rap-laden tracks suit this album is debatable, and while ‘So Hott’ is ironically similar to Motley Crue’s ‘Girls Girls Girls’ (Both Rock and Tommy Lee were married to Pamela Anderson) and easy on the ears, ‘Sugar’ is just plain terrible. It’s badly written, and seems more filler than anything else.
Despite those two tracks, Rock n Roll Jesus is to me Kid Rock’s best stuff, since Cocky, and if you’re into guitar-leaden tracks, southern rock and plenty of attitude then this is definitely an album for you.
I’ve had it on rotation since I got it.
I give it HHHH
