Jo Dee Messina has been one of Country’s strongest musical acts since her self-titled debut in 1996, which spawned two of her biggest hits including one of my personal favorite’s ‘Head’s Carolina, Tail’s California’.
So, it’s only fitting that together with Curb Records she opted to put together a Greatest Hits package. Fans of this gutsy lady will be pleased with the result, especially considering it comes with a few new songs that include ‘Was That My Life’ and ‘I Wish’.
While it’s great to hear new tracks from Messina, it’s a strange choice of song order, with mainly up-beat tempo songs dominating the first half of the album, followed by many ballads. However, despite this some of Messina’s best songs are indeed on this album.
One of the qualities about Messina to admire is that while her music can be upbeat, punchy and rollicking, she also can pull off power ballads and convey her emotions perfectly whether they are reflective, or angst-ridden.
Purists may not like this CD or Messina simply because her music does traipse along the Country-Pop line. But, for those who don’t give a damn about this, it’s hard not to be impressed with ‘I Wish’, ‘You’re Not In Kansas’ ‘Heads Carolina, Tails California’ and of course her duet with Country Mega-Star Tim McGraw on ‘Bring On The Rain’. (McGraw incidentally met Messina as a struggling musician himself, and co-produced her album).
An enjoyable collection of Messina at her best, and ‘I Wish’ is a must listen to.
Messina is slated to release her next album, Unmistakable sometime this year.
I give it 3/5
