What Am I Waiting For sees the former lead singer of Trickpony, Heidi Newfield, step into the next chapter of her career. Featuring six tracks co-written including the hit single ‘Johnny and June’, it also sees her team up with Producer Tony Martin.
What Am I Waiting For seems to be a great start- interestingly enough Trickpony’s debut album paid tribute to Cash and Waylon Jennings and Newfield’s debut solo album has done exactly the same thing.
‘Johnny and June’ is one of the gems on this album, and everyone who’s heard of Johnny Cash and June Carter know the story behind their never ending love. This song pays tribute, and in some ways emphasizes how rare real true love is.
Her album starts off with three great tracks- ‘Can’t Let Go’, ‘When Tears Fall Down’ and the aforementioned ‘Johnny and June’ and doesn’t slow down from there, ending with the raucous ‘Knocked Up’
Many fans had been worried that when Newfield decided to leave Trickpony that she could be creating musical suicide, but these fears have certainly been allayed in this nicely packaged album.
The marrying up of Martin and Newfield certainly hasn’t hurt either, with Martin helping Newfield stretch vocally.
A very solid attempt for her debut solo album that shows the potential Newfield can have as a solo artist.
I give this 3/5
