Garth Brooks is the highest selling
artist in America, even surpassing Elvis Presley. That’s not too bad from a good ole boy from Oklahoma, especially considering he started making albums in the 90’s and retired in 2001 to raise his daughter.

I discovered Garth Brooks by accident after hearing him perform on Kiss’ tribute album. Hearing him sing Kiss’ ‘Hard Luck Woman’, I was blown away by his talent. From there, I bought his ‘In Pieces’ album, and the rest is history. From that moment on I became a die-hard Garth fan.

One of the all-time greatest entertainers, not just on albums but also as a live performer, Garth Brooks has a humility that he brings to all his songs. Add to that an immense talent, and an obvious enjoyment in what he does, and you have a force to be reckoned with.

The Hits was his first greatest hits. Since then he has released The Ultimate Hits, which includes a few new songs, and the glimmer of hope for fans that he will make a return eventually to music fulltime.
The Hits has some of his classic hits, including personal favourites that include The Dance, Standing Outside The Fire, Papa Loved Mama, 'Two Of A Kind', 'Baton Rouge', and Friends In Low Places.
Looking at the track listing, I have to confess that there’s not a damn song on this album that I hate, or could not listen to. For me to say this, it is a pretty strong track listing.

This album is a timeline of Garth’s greatest hit pre 1994. If you’re looking for later stuff then it’s best to get the two disc Ultimate hits because you won’t find it here. What you will find here is foot stomping ('Baton Rouge', American Honky-Tonk Bar Association), emotionally-charged (The Dance, We Shall Be Free, 'Shameless') and love-torn (If Tomorrow Never Comes, 'Papa Loved Mama') hits.

Fans of Garth’s will have this limited release album, as well as the many other hits albums that have come out since.

While some may not like the fact that at some stage he went commercial with some of his tracks ('American Honky-Tonk bar Association'), they will love his stellar country stuff ('Friends In Low Places', 'Papa Loved Mama', 'Rodeo').

For me, Garth Brooks realised that if he wanted to dominate the world as a musician he had to be both commercial and country. It’s a feat that he succeeded at it, and he managed to open the doors for other country artists waiting to push through. He also allowed those not a fan of a country a glimpse into what it was all about, and allowed the likes of Alan Jackson, Brooks and Dunn, and Vince Gill to seep through.

While some may loathe some of this album, you can’t help but close your eyes of the magic of ‘Baton Rouge’, ‘Standing Outside The Fire’, ‘Much Too Young’ and ‘Thunder Rolls’. It’s Country and it’s best, and it’s no wonder that Garth was voted Country entertainer of the year 5 years in a row.

Brilliant album from a brilliant artists.

I give it 5/5
