Elton John has gifted us with some of the most beautiful loved songs of all time, whether it’s been on his own or with his writing partner of umpteenth years, Bernie Taupin. One of the things I love most about this CD, is that it spreads out from his earlier stuff, with 'Candle In the Wind', and then comes back to his most recent of that time with 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight'.
The only negative thing I could probably say about this CD is, that for a CD about love songs, the CD tends to stray in quite a few different ways. Daniel for example is more about a wounded war veteran than a love song, and candle in the wind is not a love song, but more about the tragedy that was Marilyn Monroe’s life. Yes, that’s right the song was originally about Marilyn Monroe, not Princess Diana, although these days it probably reminds us more of Diana.
There are so many good things to say about this CD. From the brilliantly written songs, the amazingly tight set of musicians, and just the way Elton John crafts his music in general.
For someone who spent a lot of his time drinking and taking drugs during the making of quite a few of these songs, the songs have turned out very well. But then look at the likes of other artists such as Dylan Thomas, and Ernest Hemingway who spent their lives drinking to perfect their crafts.
This version varies from the US version, which has two new tracks and omits 'Nikita', and 'Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word', two songs which to me, definitely needs to be on this album.
The album also boasts two tracks from the award winning, The Lion King.
For Elton fans who have all his albums, this is one probably to miss, but for those who grew up listening to these songs, such as myself, this is an album to have in your collection.
Tracks not to miss: Guess that’s why the call it the blues, Nikita, Daniel, your song, Candle in the wind, sacrifice and circle of life.
