The Bargain Store was released by Dolly Parton in 1975, and includes mainly self-penned compositions barring the Porter Wagoner ‘On My Mind Again’ and the Merle Haggard penned ‘You’ll Always Be Special To Me’.
The title track ‘The Bargain Store’ is one of her best known compositions, and shows Parton’s brilliant play on words. It uses the second hand merchanise of a bargain store as a metaphor for a woman damaged by a bad relationship.
At the time of its release, many radio stations mistook the wording for a reference to prostitution and stopped playing it. But despite this, it still managed to top the U.S Country Charts.
I’ve got to confess I’m not a big fan of this album. There are many songs that just fall short of the brilliance that Parton is well known for. The tracks that do save this album from being a total disaster include not only the title track but also ‘Kentucky Gambler’ ‘You’ll Always Be Special To Me’ and ‘He Would Know’.
‘Kentucky Gambler’ is a clever written song about a man taking for granted everything he had and assuming that it would always be there, only to lose it all. It’s the real gem on this album, and even covered by Merle Haggard.
Dolly is at her best when writing about someone being wronged, and ‘He Would Know’ is no exception. A song about a woman’s stopping short of wronging her man simply because he would know if she had, it’s well-written and sung beautifully.
This isn’t the usual rollicking about that many have come to expect from Dolly, and that’s perhaps it’s downfall. The songs are softer, more ballad-style, and there is less oomph compared to the likes of 'Jolene', '9 to 5', and more recently ‘Dumb Blonde’.
An Ok album, but Ms Parton can, and has done much better.
I give it 2/5
