Death Cab For Cutie- Narrow Stairs
Record Label: Atlantic
Year: 2008
Track Listing:
01. Bixby Canyon Bridge
02. I Will Possess Your Heart
03. No Sunlight
04. Cath…
05. Talking Bird
06. You can Do Better Than Me
07. Grapevine Fires
08. Your New Twin Sized Bed
09. Long Division
10. Pity and Fear
11. The Ice Is Getting Thinner
It’s been three years since Death Cab for Cutie recorded their platinum-selling, Grammy-Nominated Plans. Their sixth studio album, and second with major record label Atlantic, Narrow Stairs, promises to be just as successful.
Many fans believed when Death Cab made the leap to a major label that their Indie sound would disappear, and Plans convinced fans that their melancholy and poetic lyrics were here to stay.
Narrow Stairs is perhaps the bands darkest album, and fans of their older music will be in their element while casual listeners may not be so enthused.
The distinctive voice of Gibbard is still there intermeshed with deep lyrics, layered guitars, and lush melodies.
Gibbard has a talent of writing lyrics that have literary or cultural themes, and this album is no different. The theme is kicked off from beginning to end, with ‘Bixby Canyon Bridge’ filled with thinly veiled references to Jack Kerouac.
‘Grapevine Fires’ is centered around the wildfires that raged through California during 2007, and with its funeral harmonies is one of the highlights of this album. Another is ‘Cath’ which shows that the band can still manage to pull off power-pop when they need to
It’s hard to choose a song that does not fit on this album or one to hate. Death Cab For Cutie show that not only is Narrow Stairs about change, but as Gibbard states about the band ‘We’re not the same dear, the seasons have changed, and so have we’
While the band has made changes, it will not hold back their dedicated fans, and while Narrow Stairs is not as good as Plans, it has enough substance to keep fans coming back for me.
Songs not to miss: ‘The Ice Is Getting Thinner’, ‘Grapevine Fires’ and ‘I Will Possess Your Heart’.
