I’m one of those people who will walk into a record store, flick through artists who I just happen to like the sound of by their name alone, and without hearing any of their music, buy their CD. It’s helped me fall in love with artists such as Reba McEntire, LA Guns, Slaughter, and many more.
The same thing happened to me with Clay Walker, except this time I was flicking through my partner’s CD collection, and came across this CD.
I decided he was worth checking out, and on first listen, it is easy to see why Clay Walker has a strong fan base.
He has one of those likeable country voices that isn’t, too country nor too contemporary either. That likeable voice has helped him to sell over six million records.
The first thing I noticed about Live, Laugh, Love was that Walker's voice is up and front on the CD. A lot of artists use the music to emphasize their voices, and help to hide their imperfections.
Clay Walker does the very opposite. His voice comes out strong and clear and while it is cushioned nicely by piano and steel guitar, it is still the center of the album.
The music does not overpower his voice, and at times, such with the song holdin her and lovin you, the guitar is barely noticeable until the chorus.
With simple written lyrics, the system works well for Walker.
After listening to the album, I can’t wait to get my copy of his latest, Fall, and see if he has followed the same style through to that album.
Tracks not to miss: holdin her and lovin you, coldhearted and once in a lifetime.
I give the album 3/5
