I fell into Chris Cagle’s music by accident. I was sent a country sampler a few years back to review, and from the first enjoyed this talented artist.
Cagle’s style is different from other male country artists out there like Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, and Kenny Chesney but powerful. He has the same talent of drawing an audience into his music with his ability to tell a story through his songs, but there’s something else; something about his music that really draws you in. In an essence he’s more rock country than old country.
This album is outstanding. While his past efforts have been enjoyable but nice, this one really packs that extra oomph…as if he has gone the extra mile to make it more special.
This time around Cagle has stepped back from songwriting, and chosen to focus on making the music. While he’s a talented songwriter, of that there’s no doubt, his decision to choose songs that are perfect for his style, and music has been one that has paid off.
‘What Kind Of Gone’ kicks off the CD, and doesn’t disappoint from there. Cagle relies on clever world-play and lyrics that everyone can relate to through the song. It’s one of the only misty-eyed songs on the album, and is a little more country than the rest. The other track that does the same is ‘Keep From Loving You’.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t flaws. For some critics and lovers of traditional country, people may not enjoy the fact that Cagle has more twang in his voice, than in his music. Some may even dislike the fact he tries to score points by name dropping Merle Haggard and George Jones in ‘My Life’s Been A Country Song’.
However, Cagle has an earnest charm about him that helps to sell his songs. Then of course there’s the fact that his music is catchy, as it’s meant to be.
Yes, not all his songs are deep and meaningful, or going to garner hit after hit but it sure knows how to sing a powerful ballad and his music is still enjoyable.
I give it 4/5
