Toby Keith knew a good thing when he saw one, when he signed Carter’s Chord to his Show Dog Nashville Label.
Carter’s Chord is Becky, Emily, and Joanne Robertson and are a mixture of sweetness and perfect harmonies. The fact that their parents Barney and Carter Robertson toured with country legend Waylon Jenning during his outlaw days can’t hurt either. Nor could the fact their first recordings were on Jennings’ country album for kids.
Emily, Becky and Joanne all take turn stepping up the mike for the lead vocals, and they’re good. I’m just not sure whether they’re good enough to take their career any further than maybe a handful of albums.
The truth is that while there are some great songs such as ‘Young Love’, ‘Dear Baltimore’ and ‘Different Breed’, their music is generic and they come off sounding not much different than the likes of The Dixie Chicks or Shedaisy.
There’s the same old light lyrics, he did me wrong, girly choruses and acoustics. In an essence, while they’re good and an enjoyable listen, they’re by no means unique. That’s pretty obvious by the song title Boys Like You (Give Love A Bad Name-, which steals from Bon Jovi . (If I’m not mistaken Bon Jovi have already been claimed by Sugarland).
Their first single ‘Different Breed’ was overplayed, but didn’t seem to spark much interest, and their latest single is probably the last shot at them garnering interest over the radio.
While the girls don’t sound original, they are definitely marketable. Throw in the fact that they can actually sing, and it should be interesting to see where they can take this.
Not a bad first effort, but nothing special.
I give it 2/5
