Ten years after Alanis Morissette burst onto the scene with multi-award winning Jagged Little Pill, she’s back with the acoustic version.
Marked as an anniversary edition, it’s hard not to be cynical about the release. Part of me was, automatically, excited when I first heard rumours about an acoustic release of Jagged Little Pill but another part of me wondered if this was just Alanis attempting to recapture the fame that made her a household name.
In my opinion, Alanis has never been able to surpass the popularity of Jagged Little Pill, and her follow-up albums saw her with a lot less angst and more spirituality.
Jagged Little Pill was pure angst and screaming, while this acoustic takes sees less of the screaming, and is much mellower.
That’s not to say this is a bad album. It’s not. Although it’s different take to Jagged, it’s the same great songs.
Starting off with ‘All I Really Want’ it is given an Arabic-infused twist and Alanis’ vocals are far more controlled.
‘Hand In My Pocket’ allows for an ambience that is quite different compared to the original version. Alanis’ vocals are softer and more restrained, and she sounds less world-weary than she did when she was a 21.
‘Ironic’ has been slightly changed lyrically to keep up with the times and instead of her singing at the irony she finds not in meeting the "beautiful wife" of the man of her dreams, but instead his "beautiful husband."
Some tracks don’t change significantly- ‘Forgiven’ sees Alanis display much of the same angst and frustration at the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church.
Many may wonder what the difference is compared to the original and why it’s even worth buying?
While the original had hard riffs, and reeked of raw power, this version is instead layered with light arrangements.
The main reason I’d suggest buying this album is that Alanis has given us the opportunity to hear the songs stripped down to the basics, and allows her to showcase the real emotion behind each song.
Ultimately though, this is an album for fans. It also allows those who found Jagged Little Pill too screechy the first time around to hear it stripped down, and with less of the screech.
A tribute to one’s self is an interesting way to mark a ten-year anniversary but this time around it’s one done in style.
Worth it definitely. I give it 4/5
