06. Write Me A Letter
07. Movin’ Out
08. Walkin The Dog
Even though the recording of Aerosmith is not strong, the classic sound of Aerosmith so fully formed. The tinny recording sound can not hide vocalist Steven Tyler’s sneering vocals or his distinctive howl.
While it may not be as perfectly executed as it is now, the sound that is Aerosmith shines right throughout this album, in particular on the well-loved classics ‘Mama Kin’ and ‘Dream On’.
Nearly entirely written by Tyler much of this album is forgotten on Greatest Hits compilations and would not even be known to casual Aerosmith lovers, but for die-hard fans it highlights the beginning of the rise of one of the most prominent rock bands.
It allowed the band to showcase their talent, in particularly on the powerful ‘Dream On’ which not only showcased Tyler’s vocals but a range of keyboard and string arrangements. The string arrangements and sound are not that unfamiliar from another classic rock band Led Zeppelin and their cult classic ‘Stairway to Heaven’.
Another song to rise from the ashes of this debut is ‘Mama Kin’, which has one of the most recognisable riffs.
Sure, there are many of the same stumbles and fumbles of every first album, but it’s not a bad effort considering it was recorded in only two weeks.
Sure there are better Aerosmith fans from both their sober and drug-fuelled days but this album is a must have for fans, as it showcases the path Aerosmith would take to become one of the most enduring rock acts of all time.
Not their best effort, but definitely worthy your CD Collection if you want to try simple lyrics, and add a touch of blues influenced rock to your repertoire.
Songs not to miss: ‘Dream On’, ‘Mama Kin’, ‘Write Me A Letter’ and ‘Make It’.
I give it 3/5
