What is it about ABBA that makes them one of the most endearing bands of all time? Despite the fact some of the songs are cheesy, many can still admit to owning ABBA in their collection.
ABBA Gold is ABBA at their best from start to finish. Released with two different versions that are almost identical, save for two or three tracks, it shows why ABBA are still loved to this very day.
No ABBA compilation would be complete without Dancing Queen, so it’s only fitting that it’s the first track on Gold. While this is probably their fluffiest song and one of little substance, it is still a strong favorite among fans, including myself.
While the lyrics are considered by some are cottony-sweet it is one of many camp, dance tracks on Gold, which also include Fernando, Knowing Me Knowing You, Mama Mia and Waterloo.
Even while they were singing about one-night stands (Voulez Vous) there was still an innocent quality about ABBA.
As mentioned earlier, some of the songs are pure cheese but there are some stellar tracks as well that show the star quality and substance that was ABBA. Knowing Me Knowing You is about picking one’s partners carefully, The Winner Takes It All is about nothing ventured, nothing gained.
ABBA’s music is versatile, and stands the test of time very well. Still fresh, and vibrant, their lyrics are extremely well written. Gold has captured their best melodic moments, while allowing fans to enjoy ABBA for the fun band they were.
Tracks not to miss: Dancing Queen, Waterloo, Gimme Gimme Gimme and S.O.S
