Yet another band to come out of the late 80’s and have a hit album in the early 90’s, Extreme had a huge hit with their second album Pornograffitti and then disappeared without a trace. With the release of their first album Saudades de Rock since 1995’s Waiting For The Punchline, it seemed only fitting to review their finest album to date.
Pornograffiti stands out as one of the best albums from the late 80’s/early 90’s era alongside Dr Feelgood, Appetite for Destruction, Skid Row, and New Jersey. Combining the talented vocals of Gary Cherone, and the masterful guitar skills of Nuno Bettencourt, this is a solid album with a strong set of songs and themes that revolve around the struggle for love and romance in a decadent society.
While each song is strong, with a variety of different music styles, there is no doubt that its popularity was helped by the mega-hit ballad, ‘More Than Words’. Interestingly enough, ‘More Than Words’ along with the acoustic folk ‘Hole-Hearted’ seems completely out of place on ‘Pornograffiti’.
While the lyrics aren’t excellent, Cherone’s vocals are perfect. He may have been terrible on Van Halen’s much hated ‘3’ album but he helped make this album excellent.
Cherone manages to switch from jubilent to sensitive to plain sleaze with such ease that it leaves you feeling almost heady.
And Bettancourt just leaves me still breathless with his talent. The fact he manages to switch from playing riffs to rhythm work is awe-inspiring.
It’s certainly not hard to see why he became the darling of guitar magazines, all blown away by his powerful riffs, and high-speed solos that were reminiscent of Eddie Van Halen.
The versatility of the song styles is brilliant. ‘Get the Funk Out’ relies on bass-driven chords with a play on words, while tracks such as ‘Pornograffitti’, ‘When I’m President’ and ‘Li’l Jack Horny’ are perfect examples of hard rock.
A great album and one the band could not emulate. However, I’ll definitely be checking out their latest album to see if it has some of the magic of Pornograffitti. Here’s hoping it does with crossed fingers and abated breath.
Songs not to miss: ‘Get The Funk Out’, ‘More Than Words’, ‘When I’m President’, ‘Hole-Hearted’, and ‘He-Man Woman Hater’.
I give this 5/5
